I'll never love again

Supposed to be reading right now, decided to blog instead. Does anyone else get really... bored? Over the holidays? We wait and wait and dream for a break from work/school to come, and then once it does it's just like... "okay, now what?". I thought I would have a million DIY projects to start and work on, but when I think about starting it just doesn't seem like that much fun anymore. I got a serger for Christmas, and was well set on trying that out, but as soon as I got it threaded the bloody needle just bent for no reason! Sewing is fun and so satisfying sometimes, but 80% of the time it is just so frustrating as well.
Tomorow is New Years Eve, depending on your time zone it's probably tonight, and OF COURSE I have nothing planned. There's always so much pressure to have a good plan of NYE but I personally have NEVER been satisfied with the evening. The worst was at the turn of the new millenium, 2000, I was 11 and my brother forced my friend and I to spend the whole night in my room while he had a huge party downstairs. Yes, this is how much my parent's know what's going on with their kids. Aaarg, it drives me crazy just thinking about it!
I'm being a real downer so far, sorry about that y'all but I think we all need to vent sometimes. On the bright side... I got a new coat!

If you've been reading this blog long enough you will know who I'm trying to channel here. And when I say channel, I mean become a carbon copy. I've been looking for a coat JUST like this for ages, and found this one just last week by complete accident. I was at Goodwill, just browsing, about to leave emptyhanded, when I saw a bit a fur poking through about 3 racks down. Went to check it out and picked it up immediately. I call it my "Rockstar coat". Freaking perfect, but I might hack off just a few inches cos the length is just a bit akward on me... what to you think? Before anyone freaks out, it IS secondhand leather and fur, so I'm fine with it. I don't buy any leather, and certainly not fur, which is new but when it comes to vintage I'll buy anything. It's better than just chucking it all out, now the clothes have a new life instead of rotting away in a garbage bin.

For those of you keeping score, I'm now at 101 followers! Wootwoot!! Thanks everyone, and remember to comment to enter into the contest, ending January 5th. Don't forget your e-mail!

All I'm seeing are stillettos... I guess I didn't get the memo

I know this doesn't need to be said, but these days it's all about the shoulders. Shoulderpads used to be hot as hale in the 80's, then up untill about a year ago they've been ostrasized by fashionlovers and non-fashion people alike. Now, we all want to stuff shoulderpads in our dresses again and decorate them with fringe, studs, spikes, whatever we can get our hands on. I too am obviously loving this trend, and enjoy bedazzling my naturally...erm... "strong" shoulders with a little somethingsomething.
My newest DIY involves just that. This time I wanted to make some braided shoulderpieces to attach to a dress. I decided to try and make the shoulderpieces match exactly with the fabric of the dress for a kind of textured effect, and since I LOVE grey jersey I searched on eBay to find a long-sleeve dress that would be small enough to be bodycon. Found a long one for 10 dollars, really nice condition too. Score!

I had sketched out the way I wanted the dress to look, but as far as making the shoulderpieces it was really just a system of trial and error. What I did was I took scrap jersey fabric and cut 6 strips of fabric about 1.5 inches wide and as long as possible. Then I pulled the strips a bit so that they become more rope-like because the sides fold in on themselves. Then took 3 of the strips, knotted one end and braided the strips together then knotted them again at the end.
The next bit may involve more than one attempt, but I promise it's not impossible. What I wanted to do was basically make a braided circle that would go on the shoudlers of my dress. I took the braid and started carefully coiling around itself, making sure the braid overlaps on itself a little and makes a slight bowl shape. You DO NOT want it to be completely flat. When you've got the shape you want, take a BUNCH of pins and just pin it like crazy so it keeps its shape. Repeat with the other 3 strips of fabric, trying to make the 2 shoulderpieces as evenly sized and shaped as possible.

What's cool about this project it that it's all hand sewn and the sewing DOES NOT have to be perfect. So even if you without a machine and have limited stitching skills (...um, right here) you can still do this project without any added anxiety. Now that your shoulderpieces are all pinned out, flip it over and start hand stitching the braid together with matching thread. Since you're sewing on the bottom, the stiches can be as hideous and un-even as you want, as long as they're tough and the braids stay together when you take out all the pins!

Sewing on the bottom of the shoulderpieces didn't occur to me untill I finished the first one, so one of my shoulders has really bad, ugly stitches all over it. Whatevs, no one will be looking closely anyways.
Now you're going to attach the shoulderpieces onto your dress or top. Put on the dress and get someone you trust (oh hai Mom) to pin the shoulderpieces in the right position. This way the piece will fit perfectly on the curve of your shoulder and you'll avoid any tugging or pulling of the fabric once it's sewed on.
Next you just need to hand stitch those bad boys on. I found that if you're just a little more careful with your sewing here, the thread isn't even visible. I just did small stitches all around the edge of the shoulderpiece.
The final touch that I did was I made one more long braid, looped it twice, then sewed it onto the top of ONE of the shoulder pieces. This gave it more of a military look, which I LOOOOVE. Can't wait to wear this dress out!

As you can see, I chopped off the bottom of the dress and made it a micro-mini. I realized afterwards that I could have probably used the extra fabric from the dress to make the shoulder pieces, that way they would have matched exactly. The fabric I used was pretty close though, like anyone in a dark room would ever notice.

Fancy profesh hem... yeah right. I seriously don't know what I'm doing, I learnt nothing useful in all those years of sewing class.

As far as styling goes, anyone have any good ideas? Maybe some printed tights, and even some boots might look cool to keep with the military theme. Layering skirts overtop would work too since its a bodycon. Time to get the Spanx out for this one...

Christmas themed title

If you are on the computer today, YOU ARE TOO OBSESSED WITH THE INTERNET!! Get off and go eat some fruitcake, forgoodnesssakes. This post is being written at lightning speed cos I'm off to my Grandma's house for the rest of Christmas day... and tommorow.... and the next day... yeah, a lot of Grandma time.

I didn't get these as a a gift, but won them a few weeks ago off eBay. Gorg, non? I wanted them to be a little more odd looking, if you know what I mean, more granny-ish maybe, but I'm happy and they are so SO comfy its ridik. Equastian-chic, anyone?

I was lost, so lost

I don't even know why I'm posting right now, but here it goes. Kinda lame outfit today, I dressed for the library then opted to stay home... I know, kind of a hermit OKAY??! Anyways, today's outfit, but moreso yesterdays which I didn't take pictures of, totally remind me of one of my favourite movies Mannen Som Elsket Yngve. It's Norwegian, it has amazing music, and it involves a redhead, NEED I SAY MORE??

I've seen it about 4 times and I just can't get enough of it. My friend and I are so amused by the sporadic use of English words, but I think a lot of languages do this...? AND it takes place in the year of my birth, 1989, which is another amusing tidbit. Obviously involves a lot about the fall of the Berlin wall, so watch it as an excuse to study some 20th century history! It's a win-win situation, really.

One of my favourite scenes FYT. I think it's obvious why...

Sorry for spoiling the ending, muahaha! But really, who doesn't love some guy-on-guy action.

This Modern Love

Three quick things to take note of:

ONE
Hideous secondhand boots go with everything. Except a dance floor... I learnt that the hard way.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

TWO
Work harder to become as beautiful, inspiring, strong, confident, and above all FEROCIOUS as the mudda-effing hotties from the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning. Amazing. Just amazing.

My body is a cage

Well well well, winter break is getting closer and closer and I'm just barely hanging in there. How about you guys? You still breathing? That's good.
DIY dreams are one of the things that keep pushing me to just keep working until the break comes, then it'll be CRAFTERNOONS ALL DAY EVERYDAY BABY! Here are a few ideas floating around the ol' DIY folder...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
known sources: outsapop, hellooks, crakeryourwardrobe

I don't really know where to start! A practicle cowl neck warmer? A bejewelled button up? Some detachable sleeves on a dress, perhaps? These are just a taste of the plans to come, the rest are in my head or scrawled on scaps of paper crammed in the pages of my textbooks. Anyone else have the nasty habit of designing clothes whilst studying Shakespeare?
No? Okay it's just me then.

Also, as you may or may not have noticed, I deleted my whole links list. A lot of the blogs on there were old and not online anymore, so I just decided to scrap the list all together. I might just make a favourites list... but then I feel so bad about leaving people out. I don't know yet, just let me know if you want your link posted in the comments or drop me an e-mail. Mental Hello Kitty thanks you!

Satan's evil in a nylon gown

Where fashion and BEAUTIFULCOMICGOLD collide:

Noel and Jullian doing a Boosh Band performance at the turning on of Christmas lights at Stella McCartney in London.
This will be my outfit for tomorow: Red dress, check. Gold boots, check. Silver-haired Bestie, I'll work on that. I am seriously inspired right now.
If anyone wants to make this into a Christmas card and mail it to me, I might cry of happiness.

Let's have some fun, this beat is sick...

Just a few quick updates today. I got two of my recent eBay orders in today, one of them being those amazing boots a blogged about earlier, and another being these MINDBLOWING sunglasses. They're part steampunk, part 90's cybergoth, and one HUGE part Gaga. They'll suit me well cos I've a wierd nose just like hers. Big nosed people, unite and be proud!!

So hot, no?

And just when you thought they didn't get any better... BAM! They freakin' flip up and become Harry Potter specs! Too good, guys. Too good

Hopefully I'll have a better post for the weekend, but in the meantime I guess you guys should know that I CAVED and made a twitter account. I used to just assume twitter was a fad and would be over and old news in a few months, and agreed with my Shakespeare prof when he most eliquently stated "I am not a twit, therefor I do not tweet". But now since it looks like its here to stay... why not:

Nice and Shiny on Twitter
"Follow" me... I guess? ... Or not.... please?

There's a picture in my wallet, I dare not speak her name

This whole week I've been dressing like I'm still living in the 90's. You should have seen me on Tuesday, I looked straight out of My So-Called Life, with just a touch of Full House. Nice.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
And apparently I feel the need to pose like Jessica Rabbit nowadays?? Just trying to keep things interesting, kids.

Good gosh, do these not look like the feet of a 5 year old? I'm not over ruffly socks though... how old is too old to wear pink lacey ruffle socks with saddle shoes? Nevaaar, hahaha!

It's going to be a library weekend for me, so buckle up for some fun times and some study-tastic outfits! To be honest, sometimes my library outfits are better than my walking-around-campus-goingtoclass outfits. Not sure why, as almost all my classes are in the same building so dressing for the trek across the frozen tundra that is Winnipeg winter won't be an issue for me this year. Yay, impracticle outfits all around!
For the winter I think I will make in my personal goal to fit into this category of awesomeness:

I want your loving and I want your revenge

I wish I had more to post, but ya know... I don't. I was going to send this outfit in to Style Bubble for Susie's solid-colour-outfit challenge but I realized that this outfit doesn't have very many colours... and it's not very good. Oh well! I do like the skirt layering though.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Trying to cram as many colours into an outfit really made me realize how little colours I actually own, never mind how hard it is putting a bunch into a single outfit. To be honest I think it's quite LAZY when people (including myself, unfortunately) just wear tons of black and muted colours every day. Some say it's "chic" or "minimalistic"... I just think it's boring.

If these shoes didn't cut off the blood circulation to my feet, I'd probz wear them every day.
