Mouth to Mouth

I've wanted to post about one of my favourite movies, Mouth to Mouth, for a really long time now. My organizational skills are really crap though, the best I've got is the occasional scribbly to-do list on a page in my notebook. In other words, I get to to things when I get to things... in my own sweet time.
So Mouth to Mouth is a film from 2005, stumbled upon in accordance with my then emerging obsession with Ellen Page. Me and my friend saw Hard Candy a few years back and basically have seen every movie she's been in since then. I'd say this one's my favourite though, she's just an amazing actress and I feel she really can do anything: funny, serious, disturbed, you name it, she conquers. I'm still riffling through Google searches and Youtube to find a certain SNL sketch she starred in, though that whole episode was GREAT with her in it, love love love her!

Tracey Fragements rocked my socks off as well... really, me loving it has nothing to do with the fact that it was filmed right here in Winnipeg. Right, nooothing to do with it.

Oh right, back to the movie.
The film is basically about a teenage girl who doesn't fit in and generally hates her present life. She decides to join SPARK, Street People Armed with Radical Knowkledge, a group of youth with nothing better to do than to get clean, travel across Europe, and try for a better life both spiritually and physically. I don't want to blah on for too long because really the movie speaks for itself. At the risk of sounding horribly cliche, it really is an incredibly moving film, it literally makes me want to be a better person, and to question others, live my own life in my own way (hence my choice to lack organization...ahh, it all makes sense now!).
Besides having amazing locations, script, and actors (Ellen also starred in this movie with the extemely lovable Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, see 2nd shot of the Tracey Fragments pics), but the overall look of the movie is so.... well, I have no words. Just observe.
[warning: heavy and uncut screenshots from the movie, may have some spoilage!]

I absolutely am in love these grimy streetkids. I would give anything to be in this movie, but in real life. I so much prefer it when people just dress how they feel, with street kids they really don't even have a choice though they can only wear what they can scrounge up. You really see this in the film, the characters wear mostly the same thing and share the same clothing between both the guys and girls.

I almost forgot to mention, Jim Sturgess also is in this movie! So sexy.

The director, Alison Murray , did a documentary before Mouth to Mouth about trainhoppers. I can see that she used a lot of what she experienced with them to translate in the characters of this film. Ah, I need to see that documentary! You know you love all of this Yoncto, we should watch it together.
So if I havent't convinced you yet, just take my word and go see it! It might not be the easiest film to find but it's well worth the work!

Ho-Ly Shizniz

Whoa. Whoa.
Whoa.
StyleBytes is back online.

Ohmygawsh!!!! Maybe this means she'll be posting again too! Arrg, way too excited! Agathe I've missed you big time, and Molvin, and your cool husband. I can't wait to see how her style has evolved since her last post!
Besides squirming over Style Bytes excitement, I've also been checking out a lot of new street style sites. I actually found one from my hometown, Winnipeg. Oh that just filled my heart with pride, although it's no long running so that joy was deflated a bit. Nevertheless, I think that's so cool that there was someone here that gave a hoot about "small city fashion". We ain't no fashion capital, but we sure got personality! I also had to save this one from Rekjaivic Looks. How bloody awsome is this!?

I love this outfit to bits, it's adorable and wicked in every way. I don't want to just like it because the girl is so young, I don't really think it's fair to judge someone based on their age... both negatively and positively. Yes, I do understand that a lot of skills/knowledge can only be accumulated over time, but I don't like it when people make judgements based solely one's age. Like all of these crap shows like "World's most talented kid" and so on and so on. If these kids did the exact same stuff when they were 25 nobody would give a crap.
For example, I love Tavi with all my heart because she's an awsome blogger, crazy funny, and dresses like it's no one's buisness. And how everyone going ga-ga over this new streetstyle site Advanced Style I think is pretty biased because I'm sure A LOT of people are just interested for the novelty of it. Don't get me wrong, the site is awesome and it's great to see great fashion and style on someone other than a twenty-something hipster in New York. I just think people should try to look at the person not just how old/young they are! Otherwise it's just shallow and your not getting the full perspective.

That is all.

Print-meister

I've got a really cool DIY for you all today! Hopefully it will start to make up for my bad blogging update, once a week is just a very sad display of my commitment. If it makes a difference, I am thinking about posting... next time I'll just do telepathic posts and hope you all get them.
So for this scrumptious DIY I've got a brilliant idea that can be used for endless hours of crafting fun! I sound like an infomercial, but seriously this is pretty handy and I guarantee you success if you try it out.
It's a simple concept, but basically it's for making your own printed tights at home. No more searching around on Celeste Stein (well, maybe a little still) because creating your own funky tights couldn't be easier.

Take a cardboard box and unfold it so it lays flat on the ground. Your going to want to cut 2 leg shapes that are the same size as your own. To make sure you get the right size, grab a tape measure and measure the circumference of your ankle, knee, and thigh. Divide each number in 2 then mark the 3 widths on a rectangular cut piece of cardboard that is the length of your leg from your ankle to your upper thigh (right up to your crotch, basically).
Once you've cut out these 2 shapes get some duct tape and tape the entire surface of the cutouts! Just keep winding it around and around as you work your way from top to bottom. This is so that you can use these leg patterns over and over again, the paint won't soak into the cardboard as your decorating your tights!
Now that you've got your waterproof leg patterns you can let your imagination run wild! Put the tights/leggings/hosiery on the pieces and use paints to decorate them however you like. The first time I used this method was about 2 years ago for a spirit week outfit. I made stencils out of scrap cardboard, then laid them down on the tights and spray painted them. They dry pretty much instantly if you're using spray paint, so just flip them over and do the other side then you're done! Also, I used tights that matched my skin tone, so it looked like a tattoo effect.
This time I wanted to make a splatter pattern on some basic black leggings. I put the leggings on my leg pattens then hung them on a hanger. I did my splattering in my shower because for some reason it didn't occur to me to go outside...

Anyways, I used white acrylic paint to splatter the leggings, I just dipped a paintbrush in the bottle and went crazy! I also used the ole' toothbrush method, that proved quite handy to make smaller spray marks in those hard to reach areas.
When I ran out of paint I was finished my masterpiece. They looked soooo good as the finished product! Note "looked", as in the past tense. I put the leggings in the washing machine after they paint dried, but most of the paint came off in the wash! I'm going to try it again but with something a bit tougher than acrylic paint. I think I've still got some white paint left from when I did my room...
I can't wait to try out other print and technique, hopefully future attempts will be more successful!

Bookworm

Ah, I know! A whole week and no post!? It's ridiculous, but then again I've got an atrocious assignment list to match. It's not all bad news though because last week I got a laptop! Very exciting stuff indeed, it's gorgeous and has lots of cray-zay features (does anyone really need finger print identification?) so hopefully this new bit of equipment will lead to more posting.... then again, I AM writing from the fam computer at this very moment...
I've got some extra outfit pictures floating around on this computer, here's one from about 3233 weeks ago, back when there was no snow on the ground and I had the leisurly time to do mini photoshoots in the morning.

I'd also like this time to Post a Wanted Persons ad.... actually it's a wanted shoe ad. Please if anyone finds these floating around on the web, notify my ASAP so they can come home with me! Last seen: TeenVogue September 2008. I have looked high and low, favourite hangout (chineselaundry.com), Google search, the like, yet still no sign of them.
Please help these lovely booties find the way to their rightful place... in my closet.

Halloween: Part Deux

Finally the elections are over and everyone can just relax for a second! I don't even live in the U.S. but the election hype has spread all over the world, wouldn't you agree? I was seriously stressing last night when I caught a glimpse of CNN and McCain was ahead in the few states that I saw. I didn't get to find out who won untill the next morning but let me tell ya that I was extremly releived. I'm not even American but I think that Obama seems very honest and wants to make change for the better. I know that changes in the states will effect Canada in the long run, and many other countries I'm sure, so it's always good to be aware of these things.

Aaaanyways... here's the post about my Halloween costumes. As I proclaimed before, I frikin love Halloween and putting together a costume is pretty much the funnest thing next to eating cupcakes and getting your favourite song on shuffle. I had 2 costumes this year, one for the earlier part of the evening, the other for "da clubbin" section of the night (which was totally lame btw, I'm sticking with trick-or-treating).

I handed out candy at a friends house while a group of them sang disney songs on the lawn. I actually enjoyed it, everyone loved my costume and I loved the attention.... HA! I didn't have anything that I could but together as a comprehensive princess costume so I did a quick Cruella DeVille. I know, I know Susie did this a few weeks back for a costume party but I SWEAR I didn't realize that untill a while later. Note the matching tights!

(Outfit: Veil-h&m, colourblock sweater-thrifted, blazer-le Chateau, wiggle dress-thrifted, belt-thrifted, kneehighs-welovecolors.com, shoes-(very old)WalMart, Mom's old beaver fur coat... sorry animal lovers!)
I tried to do a beehive situation in my hair, it turned out pretty good considering it took about 10 minutes. I'm not one for intricate hair, but I was so impressed with what I could come up with. Dang I'm multi-talented.
And for the evening... drum roll please.......

"I'm Old Greeeeeeegg!"

BOOya, told you it was awsome! I wanted to do this costume for months, I was so excited. I'm very quite proud of the whole thing, especially the scaley legs. I told my friend that I would be satisfied if just ONE person knew who I was (Boosh in not big in Canada) and alas at the veeeeery end of the night someone noticed! I had already left the first club and I wanted to get into this other social that my brother was organizing. I was so mad I couldn't get in, but then some of my friend's friends where just comming out as we were leaving. I didn't really know them so I just stood quitely while they said hi. Then the girl was like "Excuse me, but, are you supposed to be old Gregg?". I was so excited, I was just like "Yes, yes, one person, that's all I needed! I'm satisfied now, lets go home." She took a picture of me to show to her friends, apparently I'm no longer the only boosh fan in town anymore.

To make the leggings it was really quite easy, yet very time consuming. I stayed up all last Wednesay night to do them so I wouldn't be crunched for time later on. I litterally started at 10:30 pm and finished at 6:15 am... and I had class at 8:30! Whatever, it was pretty fun actually, I listened to Ramones greates hits, watched the Wizard Rockumentary, High School musical, the Juno soundtrack 2 times over, then I was done. To make them I just used a big shiny green coat, some leggings and a glue gun with LOTS of glue stick refill... seriously, I went through about 25 sticks.
I cut the coat into strips with rounded edges, like scales, in the longest length I could get for the material. Then I put the leggings on and started glueing! starting from the ankles I did one leg at a time, I just cut the stip so it could go around my leg then glued it all the way around. Just do this row by row, making sure that each strip is long enough to go all the way around. It was a little tough to get them off afterwards (my own fault, I glued them on a bit too tight on some parts) but somehow they stretched so putting them on the next night was a breeze.

Perhaps not the most useful DIY, but I know I'll be using this method to make some sort of layered skirt, with a sewing machine this time! Lets all hope that a skirt won't take quite so long to make...
